God Made My Eyes and Ears: A Toddler Bible Lesson About God's Creation

One of the things I love about working with toddlers is watching them discover things that most adults stopped noticing years ago.
A piece of paper can completely derail a conversation. A bird outside the window can become the most exciting part of the day. A song change stops their attention span in its tracks. They notice everything. And honestly, that's how they learn so quickly.
As adults, we often move so quickly through life with a filter to focus on important information that we forget to slow down and appreciate the things God has placed around us. Toddlers haven't learned that habit yet. They are still discovering the world one sight, one sound, and one experience at a time. That's one reason I was excited to put together this week's lesson.
In Week 3 of our God Made Me curriculum, children learn a simple truth:
God made my eyes and ears.
That may sound like a small lesson, but it actually points children toward something much bigger. Every time they see a flower, hear a song, recognize a familiar face, or listen to a Bible story, they are using gifts God has given them. The goal isn't simply helping children identify body parts. It's helping them begin connecting the world around them to the God who created them.
Our focus verse this week comes from Proverbs 20:12:
"The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both."
I love the simplicity of that verse.
Sometimes in children's ministry we feel pressure to teach something deep or complicated, but the truth is that the most important lessons are also some of the simplest. Before children can understand larger concepts about God, they need a foundation. They need to know that God made them. They need to know that God loves them. They need to know that God is involved in their lives. This lesson helps build that foundation.
When a child learns that God made their eyes, they begin to see themselves as intentionally created. When they learn that God made their ears, they begin to understand that even the smallest parts of who they are matter to Him. That may seem like a simple truth, but its so strong.
One of the things I appreciate about this lesson is how easy it is to reinforce throughout the week. Parents can point out things children see during a walk. Volunteers can ask what sounds children hear in the classroom. A bird singing outside, music during worship, a rainbow after a storm, or a favorite story at bedtime can all become reminders that God created us with the ability to experience the world around us.
Children learn best when truth moves beyond the lesson and into everyday life. That's one reason our curriculum uses stories, songs, movement, crafts, and repetition. We aren't simply trying to help children memorize information. We're helping them experience truth in ways they can understand and remember.
This week's story especially emphasizes all the ways we use our eyes and ears with relatable toddler examples.
3 Ways to Reinforce This Lesson at Home
1. Go on a Seeing Walk
Take a short walk and ask your child to point out things they can see. Trees, flowers, birds, clouds, cars, or animals all become opportunities to remind them that God made their eyes.
2. Play a Listening Game
Pause for a moment and ask your child what sounds they hear. They may notice things adults overlook. Help them connect those sounds to the ears God gave them.
3. Thank God Together
At bedtime or during prayer, thank God for the eyes to see and ears to hear. Simple prayers help children connect everyday experiences to their faith.
