Why Music Changes Everything in Toddler Ministry

One thing I am learning deeply in toddler ministry right now is this:
Music changes everything. It's true.
Toddlers may not sit through long teaching moments. They may not fully understand every Bible story detail. They WILL wiggle, wander, and seem distracted.
But music reaches them in ways words alone often cannot.
I have watched children who seemed completely inattentive snap to focus at the sound of music. They weren't so interested in what I had for them, UNTIL the music played. Suddenly I was able to engage with them through simple worship songs, motions, repetition, rhythm, and joy. A Bible truth that may be difficult to explain in conversation becomes memorable when it is sung consistently.
Music helps toddlers:
• remember truth
• participate instead of only listen
• engage multiple senses
• feel safe and connected
• experience joy in worship
And honestly, I think sometimes we underestimate how spiritually aware children really are. They may not be able to explain worship yet, but they can experience it. You can see that in the joy of watching a toddler start to get excited and dance to music without prompting.
Some of the sweetest ministry moments happen when toddlers begin singing little pieces of truth throughout the day:
“God loves me.”
“Praise the Lord.”
“Jesus loves me.”
Those small seeds matter.
In toddler ministry, music is not filler between activities. It IS part of the teaching. For me, it's at least 60%. When I first started working with this age group, my techniques from prior older groups just didn't cut it.
The truth is, while our lesson are exceedingly, excruciatingly important for our children, they truly are more interested in that vibrant yellow dump truck over there. A LOT more.
So when I started and saw the complete disinterest, I thought to myself, how in the world am I going to get any truth relayed to this child, if I can't get her engaged? Then music happened, and the game changed.
I personally like to use the Cedarmont Kids Bible Sing-a-long Collection for it's vibrant instrumentals, remember, vibrant is important. You can also find most any song you need in their collection. I like to choose at least 3 songs that we can engage with as part of the truth I am trying to teach. If the reading doesn't do it, and the activities don't do, and the repetition doesn't do, the music likely will.
Most, no 90% of the time, the lesson children remember most is not the perfectly planned object lesson — it's your impromptu discovery of how they learn and then engaged with them in a truth together. As a teacher, there is nothing better than seeing the spark of recognition in someone's eyes and nothing more precious than in a toddler's eyes as they learn about how much Jesus loves them.
So be determined and try everything. You're not dumb and you're not failing your kids. You just haven't found what engages them yet. If you're struggling with your group, or even one child, ask the Lord to help you identify the learning method that fits them best. I'm sure music will be involved.
Let God bless and serve you.
